Thomas More, a lawyer, humanist, and theologian, began royal service in 1518 and became Lord Chancellor in 1529 during Henry VIII's reign (1509-1547). He resigned in 1532 after refusing to accept Henry's divorce to Catherine of Aragon. More was executed by Henry in 1535. [Furtado: 1001 Days]
