Synopsis
"This film won the grand prize at the 2016 Sundance film festival and is Israel's entry for the 2017 Oscar competition. It's a study of the slow infiltration of the wider world into traditional Bedouin culture. Layla is a university student who falls in love with a fellow student, causing havoc in her family, which has already been disrupted by her father's choice to take a second wife. A well acted, well crafted film, offering insight into the difficulties of cultural change in the Middle East. Both this film and Wadjda, a recent film from Saudi Arabia, explore the efforts of young women to find an alternate path within the confines of patriarchal rules and social pressure. Thoughtful viewers will enjoy this movie." [Reviewer on Netflix]
