"An expeditionary force was sent, under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte, in July 1798. The force landed reasonably easily at a Aboukir Bay near Alexandria, defeated the Egyptian army at the Battle of the Pyramids, and began a campaign of systematic looting and suppression. The following month, a British naval force under Nelson destroy the French fleet at anchor (the Battle of the Nile, August, 1798), leaving the French effectively stranded. The French proceeded up the Nile, reaching Aswan in February 1799, before turning north, crossing the Sinai Peninsula and laying siege to Acre (March-May 1799), where once again the British intervened. Lacking supplies and succumbing to sickness, Napoleon finally withdrew to France." [DK Timelines, p. 336]
