Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
This battle lasted less than an hour and was fought between the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and the force led by the Duke of Cumberland. The prince had landed in Scotland in 1745 and supported by the Highland clans seized Edinburgh. By mid-April 1746, the Prince's army had been forced back to Inverness. "The Hanoverians' aggression was matched by the 'scorched earth' reprisals led by Cumberland, which broke the Highland clan system and led to lasting bitterness." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
