Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
The two countries had shared the same Monarch since 1603. Scottish motives included compensation for losses from a mismanaged colony in Central America (Darien scheme). There was still bitterness concerning the failed Scottish Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. But because of increasing prosperity, most Scottish citizens were reconciled to the union.
