"On June 26, 1519, in Leipzig, at the request of Pope Leo X, Dr. Johann Eck, professor of theology at the University of Ingolstadt, began a marathon, eighteen-day public debate with Martin Luther. . . . Yet the disputation with Eck helped to crystallize his ideas, especially that salvation was a matter of faith alone. The pope was convinced that Luther was a threat and in June 1520 issued a bull of excommunication. The Reformation had begun." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
