The first major battle of the Thirty Years' War was the Battle of White Mountain near Prague in which Sweden's King Gustavus Adolphus saved the Protestants. Gustavus was unable to provide relief for the townspeople of Magdeburg, and the town was sacked by soldiers from the Holy Roman Empire. [Furtado: 1001 Days]
