Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"In 1603 Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed shogun by the emperor Go-yozei; this was the foundation of the Tokugawa shogunate that would rule Japan until 1868. . . . Ieyasu's palatial castle at Edo [Tokyo] became the administrative capital of Japan. Ieyasu formally abdicated in favor of his son Tokugawa Hidetada in 1605, but nevertheless remained the effective ruler of Japan as 'Cloistered Shogun' until his death in 1616. The final challenge to Japan's unity, a rebellion by Hideyori, was crushed in 1615." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
