Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Hideyoshi's political unification of Japan was complete when the castle at Odawara eventually capitulated in August 1590. . . . completed the unification that Nobunaga had left unfinished when he was assassinated in 1582. Previously, Hideyoshi had conducted a series of swift campaigns against virtually all the daimyos (regional warlords), making them his vassals. He did not take the title of shogun but effectively became the supreme commander with the emperor's blessing. . . Hideyoshi later became bogged down in a campaign to secure Korea as a gateway for an attack on China. . . . He died leaving a weak son in charge of powerful warlords, paving the way for the third great unifier of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
