Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Queen at only six days old after the death of her father, James V of Scotland, from 1242 Mary was brought up at the French court. In 1558, she was married to the Dauphin, a sickly boy of fourteen, and when Henry II died the following year, Mary suddenly found herself Queen of France. Within months, her husband, Francis II, was also dead and Mary returned to Scotland in August 1561, where she was soon at odds with her Protestant subjects. In July 1565, she married (for love) the Earl of Darnley, but the marriage soon turned sour and Darnley joined a number of Protestant nobles to kill Rizzio, who was suspected of encouraging Mary's Catholic sympathies. Mary was pregnant and in June 1566 gave birth to a son, the future James VI (James I of England), and then Darnley was found dead in mysterious circumstances. Mary's next, disastrous step was to marry the Earl of Bothwell, who had been implicated in Darnley's death. It was a fatal move--the Scottish nobility raised an army against them, and in July 1567 Mary was forced to surrender and was formally deposed. She later escaped from prison in Loch Leven and fled to England, to spend the rest of her life in exile." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
