Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
Hungary was defended by two leaders: Hungarian warrior John Hunyadi and Italian friar Giovanni da Capistrano. The Hungarian border fortress, Belgrade, was under siege by Mehmed. "Thousands of peasants, armed with scythes and clubs, joined up with Hunyadi's knights and mercenaries to form a relief army. Sailing down the Danube, they broke through the Ottoman blockade to join the defenders inside Belgrade." [Furtado: 1001 Days] "Major Ottoman advances are halted for seven decades; last major victory for Hunyadi." [Wikipedia: Timeline of Middle Ages]
