"The Magyars were nomadic horsemen from central Asia who migrated to the area of modern-day Hungary in the late ninth century. For half a century their ferocious raiding parties regularly marauded westward across Germany, penetrating as far as Italy and Spain. . . . In 955, however, Otto I, duke of Saxony and king of the Germans, succeeded in gathering a substantial force to take on the Magyars. With some 10,000 knights, Otto set out to confront a Magyar horde. . . . According to German chroniclers, the Magyars were undone by their indiscipline. . . . The Battle of Lechfeld ended the Magyar incursions. Otto emerged with great prestige, and in 963 was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Western Europe took a major step toward security."
