Dagobert I was a part of the Merovingian dynasty that began with Clovis I, more than 100 years earlier. His death in 639 signaled the end of a united Frankish kingdom. In 751, Peppin the Short deposed the last Merovingian king. Peppin the Short was the first in the Carolingian line. His father was Charles Martel and his son was Charlemagne the Great.
