Oswald, upon becoming the king of Northumbria, sent for Aidan, an Irish monk from Iona. Oswald made Aidan a bishop and granted him the tiny island of Lindisfarne to build a monastery. Among the accomplishments of the monastery at Lindisfarne was "The Lindisfarne Gospels" an illuminated book completed in 715 and now in the British Museum. [Furtado: 1001 Days]
