This was the first of four edicts in which Diocletian persecuted the Christians. An estimated 10% of the Roman population was Christian at that time. The first edict ordered the destruction of all churches. The fourth ordered that Christians sacrifice to the gods of Rome or be executed. [Furtado: 1001 Days]
