"Landlocked Zambia (16.7 million), another product of British colonialism, shares the mineral riches of the Copperbelt with Katanga Province in its northern neighbor, DRCongo. However, the stable commodity prices on which the country depends have fluctuated wildly since independence, and the railways leading to Zambia’s outlet ports in Angola and Moçambique were rendered inoperative by Cold War conflicts. More recently, the Chinese have taken an interest in Zambia’s minerals, and they have invested in railroad repairs as well as the expansion of mining operations—resulting in an annual economic growth rate averaging about 7 percent over the past decade."
