"By this stage, the world organization was on a roll, for this event followed conferences on the child (1990), the environment (1992), human rights (1993), and population (1994) and preceded that on habitat and cities (1996). . . . All of these Conferences prepared the way for the Beijing Conference, helping to break new ground in the struggle for equal rights and a central role for women in decision-making at all levels of society.' As such, the conference had all the by now standard features--189 governments participated, 2,100 NGOs were in attendance, 30,000 individuals gathered at a parallel “fringe” conference, and the whole event was covered by 5,000 media representatives. The resulting document was the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. It asserted women’s rights to equality and more specifically declared that women had a “right to inherit.” It condemned rape as a war crime. To please the feminists, it asked nations to reconsider laws against illegal abortion; to please the Vatican, other conservative Christians, and the Muslim world, it affirmed the “social significance of maternity, motherhood and the role of parents in the family and in the up-bringing of children."
