"At the UN Conference on Environment and Development--the “Earth Summit” held in Rio in 1992--the proceedings were covered daily by CNN television, by the press agencies, and by the world’s newspapers. No fewer than 108 heads of state or government flew to Rio make a statement, an indication that this was the place to be. But equally interesting was the presence at the conference of 2,400 representatives of more than 650 NGOs, while some 17,000 people took part in NGO forum activities. Also there were the powerful and liberal American philanthropic foundations such as Ford, Rockefeller, MacArthur, Pew, and Carnegie, which funded many of the study groups, workshops, and publications surrounding the conference." [Kennedy: Parliament of Man, Kindle, Location 2562-73] Brazil, India, and Malaysia vocally expressed resentment at Northern concerns about their deforestation, dirty industrialization, global warming, and loss of species, charging that the proposed environmental control measures were simply means to prevent the South from catching up."
