"On a vast plain beside the Irawaddy river, Pagan in central Burma (Myanmar) is one of the world's great religious sites and was the capital of Burma's first supreme king, Anawrahta (1044-77). He introduced Theravada Buddhism to his people and encouraged the building of pagodas and temples. By the 13th century, several thousand stood within an area of 5 sq miles (41 sq km), 2,000 of which still survive today--a complex rivaled only by Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which flourished at the same time."
