"Upon independence, Moçambique also chose a Marxist course with unfortunate economic and political consequences. Here, too, a rebel movement supported by South Africa caused civil conflict, created famines, and generated a huge stream of refugees toward Malawi. Moçambique possesses neither oil nor as much agricultural land as Angola. But it does have considerable bauxite and coal deposits, and its long Indian Ocean coastline provides an advantageous relative location (as well as access to promising offshore natural gas reserves). In recent years, port traffic has been revived, and the country is working with South Africa on building a joint Maputo Development Corridor (Fig. 7-20). But despite the rapid growth of Moçambique’s economy over the past decade, here again we have an African country that depends too heavily on a single commodity—bauxite (aluminum ore), which accounts for about one-third of all exports. And, like Angola, this country has performed poorly in distributing the benefits of economic development, barely affecting the severe poverty that still reigns among Moçambique’s masses."
