"The Battle of Diu, was a naval battle fought on 3 February 1509 in the Arabian Sea, in the port of Diu, India, between the Portuguese Empire and a joint fleet of the Sultan of Gujarat, the Mamlûk Burji Sultanate of Egypt, the Zamorin of Calicut with support of the Republic of Venice." [Wikipedia] The King of Portugal, looking for a sea route to India, sent a fleet of 21 ships under the command of Dom Francisco de Almeida. He was opposed by a coalition of Mamluks, Ottoman Turks, and local Indian rulers plus Venetians. Portuguese ships destroyed the ships of the coalition. Over the next several decades, at least three more naval battles were fought and the Muslims lost all of them. The Mamluks of Egypt fell within 10 years of this battle. [Aldrete: Decisive Battles]
