"Pretty well all the environmental/atmospheric data now suggest that we face serious pressures on our ecologies and that global warming in particular is a certifiable fact. With glaciers disappearing throughout the Swiss Alps and the icefields of Antarctica vanishing into the sea, how could they not be? Bound up with this is the industrialization of Asia, very much driven by the need of their national regimes to provide better living standards to the peoples of China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan—how exactly do you create prosperity for three billion people without destroying much of the globe? Even collectively we may not be able to solve this critical problem, but what is sure is that no single nation can do it alone. The challenge is an international one, to be tackled by international means. . . . . It is no use asking small island nations to take steps to stop global warming. The burden is on the United States, the European Union, China, India, Japan, Russia, Brazil, and a few more large and/or prosperous states, precisely because it is their economic activities that contribute most to the deterioration of our planet."
