Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"A traffic accident, in which four Palestinians from the Jabalia refugee camp were killed by an Israeli army vehicle, led to an explosion of protests in the occupied territories. The causes of the Intifada ('shaking off'), though, go deeper than a traffic accident. . . . The Palestinians felt that their cause was forgotten. Rapid population growth, heavy unemployment, and humiliating security measures imposed by the Israelis all fueled Palestinian frustration. . . . The Intifada convinced many Israelis that direct negotiations with the Palestinians were now necessary. . . . In 1993, such negotiations ended this Intifada, but many issues regarding nationhood were left unanswered." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
