Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"The real breakthrough came with the Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat's startling visit to Israel in November 1977, which at least implied diplomatic recognition of that country.… The biggest stumbling block was the Palestinian territory of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. . . . Eventually, Sadat decided to pursue Egyptian national interests rather than wider Arab interests. Two main documents were produced, which provided a framework for peace between Egypt and Israel, in which the Sinai was returned in exchange for a peace treaty in 1979. . . . The Israelis gained much--without Egypt, no hostile coalition could threaten their survival--but this did not provide peace on the other borders. Sadat was accused of betraying the Arab cause and was assassinated by Islamists in October 1981." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
