Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"After several days of running battles between students and riot police in Paris, the situation became even more dangerous for the government when striking workers joined in the protest. . . . Street battles in Paris's Latin Quarter caused widespread working-class indignation against the police, and an unofficial general strike spread, involving more than 10 million workers. It paralyzed France for two weeks. The government appeared close to collapse. The French workers, it turned out, had little sympathy for revolutionary student rhetoric. Major concessions in pay, working conditions, and trade union rights ended the general strike and defused the insurrection. . . . Old attitudes toward education and youth had been challenged, though, bringing change not just in Paris but across Europe." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
