"?Between April and June in televised hearings watched by an estimated 20 million viewers, the army's counsel, Joseph N. Welch, showed McCarthy up to devastating effect as a vicious bully and liar. . . . In September the unanimous report of a Senate committee denounced McCarthy's behavior as 'inexcusable' and 'reprehensible,' and in December the Senate formally condemned him by 67 votes to 22. He remained a senator, but his day was done and he died in 1957 of acute hepatitis." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
