"On December 15, the great Sioux chief Sitting Bull was killed on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota by Native police, trying to arrest him.… At Wounded Knee Creek on December 29, a battalion of the U.S. 7th Cavalry surrounded a camp of 350 Sioux they were trying to round up and send to Nebraska. One Sioux tribesmen's refusal to surrender his rifle, unless he was paid for it, set off a sudden explosion of firing, in which the cavalry fired Hotchkiss machine guns. In the end, 25 cavalry troopers lay dead along with more than 150 Sioux men, women, and children." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
