Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
"Daimler invented the internal combustion engine with his assistant Wilhelm Maybach, working in great secrecy in a greenhouse in Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart. . . . A few miles away and a few months later in Mannheim, Karl Benz unveiled the first motorcar--the three wheeled motorwagen. Benz invented many of the devices that form the car to this day, including the battery, spark plugs, the accelerator, the gearbox, and the clutch. Daimler and Benz made the fast modern world possible." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
