Excerpts from Books and Wikipedia
This battle was a part of the Greek War of Independence. "But one national independence movement caught the imagination of the peoples of Europe: the fight of the Greeks for their independence from the Turkish Ottoman Empire. . . . On October 20, 1827, a combined British, Russian, and French squadron, commanded by Admiral Codrington, entered Navarino Bay on the coast of Greece, where the larger Turkish Ottoman fleet was anchored. . . . Codrington's squadrons, confident in their superiority, destroyed the enemy fleet and cut the Egyptian forces from further reinforcement or supply. Within five years, Greece was accepted as an independent country by the European powers and the Ottoman Empire." [Furtado: 1001 Days]
