Synopsis
"Written in the days when people could tell the truth, Parkman describes the American Indian, especially his geographic predicament of being trapped between two competing empires. It reminded me of small countries in between the USA and the old USSR. The Indians' weak link was their dependence on the Europeans' guns, knives, and alcohol. Some were lured by the Jesuits, who converted them to Christianity to use them to fight the people to the South, while the people of New York used the Iroquois to protect NY against the people of New France. Ver-r-r-r-r-y educational. Parkman writes very well--although simply, not like Gibbon--and always refers to original sources, and illustrates fully the personalities of the important people. It's vital that the reader have access to google to learn all the old geographic names." [Amazon]
